Though natural causes can lead to household water damage, one of the most common reasons that water damage occurs is due to household leaks from appliances.
When appliances leak, it can often go unnoticed for an extensive amount of time—this can create a problem as water damage is best treated quickly. However, by performing regular checks, this can be prevented.
Hot Water Heater
Despite the official lifetime of a hot water heater being around 10 years, leaks can start much sooner than this. As parts grow worn from usage, they can begin to break down and let water escape, which can lead to a serious issue if it is left untreated.
Refrigerator
The lines connecting the refrigerator to a household’s water supply can often experience micro-tears or seal issues that can create leaks when they are used. While these leaks are typically small, because refrigerators are rarely moved, the damage they cause can compound and lead to far more serious issues. Check behind the refrigerator as part of your regular home maintenance to be sure that all is well.
Dishwasher
As with refrigerators, dishwashers can also create hidden damages, which are often worse because of how much water a dishwasher requires. Water damages from dishwasher leaks are not always covered by insurance, so checking in your dishwasher’s cubby is also a good regular practice to uphold.
Washing Machine
The washing machine hoses have one of the biggest reputations for leaking, requiring monthly inspection to ensure everything is operational. Additionally, experts recommend that these hoses are replaced every five years regardless of their outward appearance.
Air Conditioner
The moisture created from an HVAC unit is a byproduct of its operation and is generally drained away. Unfortunately, any issue with this drainage system will not cause a performance problem right away, but can lead to water damage in and around the unit. Check your manufacturer’s instructions and be sure to follow regular maintenance and inspection schedules for the most effective prevention for this.
